Stockholm Returns to the 2020 Diamond League Series

By Adam Kopet

The IAAF announced this week that the 2020 Diamond League schedule will include 15 meets, expanding from the previous 14 meets.

The series will get underway April 17 in Doha, Qatar. China will host two meets, including Shanghai on May 16, but the new meet host has yet to be named. The new event is scheduled for May 10.

Stockholm, which had been removed from the Diamond League series last month, will return to the series in 2020 after all. The meet will be held May 24.

The Prefontaine Classic is set to return to Eugene with the completion of the new Hayward Field. The meet is scheduled for June 7, which is 12 days before Eugene will host the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The Birmingham Diamond League meeting will be replaced next year by an event Aug. 16 in Gateshead, United Kingdom, as the Birmingham stadium is undergoing construction.

Other changes to the Diamond League series include Zurich hosting a single Diamond League final meet, as well as each Diamond League meet seeing its television window cut to 90 minutes instead of the previous two-hour window. Brussels will continue to host a Diamond League meeting, but it will no longer be a final.

The IAAF has yet to determine which events will be considered Diamond League events, however, a new series called the World Athletics Continental Tour is expected to highlight the events not featured on the Diamond League circuit. No additional information was given about events and schedules for the Continental Tour meetings.
